Founded by Tyden Rickard, The Film Exchange is an annual initiative powered by T. Rickard Productions to equip the next generation of storytellers in rural Alabama. Each year, select high school students across Southeast Alabama receive professional-grade video equipment, hands-on training, and mentorship to launch their own production careers. Designed to remove barriers to entry in the film industry, the pilot program provides real-world experience and creative confidence to students who otherwise may not have access—unlocking pathways for talent often overlooked.

01
Discover Rural Talent
The journey begins with a region-wide short film competition open to public high school students across Southeast Alabama. Submissions are judged solely on creativity—no fancy equipment required. Whether it’s filmed on a webcam or a phone, we’re looking for original thinkers with bold ideas.
02
Develop Cohort of Storytellers
From the competition, a select group of winners is chosen. Each receives a complete filmmaker’s starter kit: a MacBook, DSLR camera, professional software, microphone, tripod, cash prize, and expert-led training. The goal? Equip them with every tool needed to turn their creative passion into a profession.

Equip for Entrepreneurship
Beyond the gear and training, students participate in an entrepreneurship intensive—and take on their first client project. This work-based learning experience gives them a real portfolio piece, laying the foundation for long-term creative careers.

Scale Creativity for All
Launched in 2024 with seven high schools, the program tripled its reach in 2025 to serve 21 schools. We're now building a statewide—and eventually national—model to bring this opportunity to rural communities everywhere.
